Indian Women’s Hockey Team Triumphs in Inaugural Women’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup, Secures World Cup Spot with 7-2 Win over Thailand

The Indian women’s hockey team secured a historic victory by clinching the inaugural Women’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup title, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards the FIH Women Hockey 5s World Cup Oman 2024. 

In a thrilling final showdown, India displayed their dominance, overpowering Thailand with a final score of 7-2. This victory not only earned them the championship but also secured their ticket to the prestigious World Cup event.

The match began with India showing tremendous aggression, as Mariana Kujur struck early in the 2nd minute, setting the tone with an impressive field goal. 

However, Thailand quickly retaliated with two goals from Kunjira Inpa (5′) and Sanpoung Kornkanok (5′), momentarily putting India on the back foot. The Indian team swiftly responded, with Monika Dipi Toppo (7′) showcasing her skills by levelling the scores with a fantastic field goal. 

Mariana Kujur (8′) continued her impressive form, reclaiming the lead for India. Jyoti (10′) extended India’s advantage, making it 4-2 by the end of the first half.

The second half witnessed India’s relentless pursuit of victory, as they consistently tested Thailand’s defence with precision and pace. Navjot Kaur (23′) further bolstered India’s lead with a fifth goal. 

Jyoti (27′) continued her goal-scoring spree, adding another to make it 6-2, and Mahima Choudhary (29′) sealed the victory with a seventh goal. The match concluded with India triumphing over Thailand with a resounding 7-2 scoreline.

Recognizing the remarkable achievement of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, Hockey India announced a cash prize of Rs 2 Lakh for each player and Rs 1 Lakh for the support staff. The victory not only brings pride to the nation but also secures India’s participation in the FIH Women Hockey 5s World Cup Oman 2024.

Hockey India President Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey commended the team for their outstanding performance and congratulated them on their qualification for the World Cup. He praised the collective team effort and extended his best wishes for their upcoming journey to Oman.

Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh also congratulated the team, emphasising their immense pride in the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s triumph at the Women’s Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier. Singh acknowledged the hard work, dedication, and training that contributed to this remarkable victory, which has brought honour to the entire nation.
